Hey friends,
It’s been a second. Life has been busy, and I’ve hit early onset writer’s block. Trying to put out the next good bit of content has left me stuck. Feel free to plug any ideas or interests in the comments:
There are around four write-ups in the works, if that’s any indication of my general attention span and lifecycle of interests. This applies to most things in my life outside of running— I’m reading three books right now, because sometimes life calls for Dune instead of The Lord of the Rings and Outlive. I won’t finish any of them soon.
In the meantime, please enjoy what I’ve been watching on YouTube:
Make Running Presents: NO TURNING BACK, Make Running
Jacky Hunt-Broersma ran the 2025 Speed Project, an unsanctioned race from Los Angeles to Las Vegas, entirely solo– the first amputee athlete to make the attempt. Losing her leg to a rare form of cancer, Jacky shows us what her and brother define as pure stubbornness as she makes the solo trek. The project was backed by Altra Running; I find it incredible that a runner like Jacky can have support and a voice in this incredible endeavor. Most will have never heard of her before this video, but she was clearly a celebrity at the Speed Project, and she’ll be known now.
Full Throttle | Ep. 1 - Sea Otter Classic | Big Plans, Alexey and Avery
I’ve been trying to expand my reach beyond running YouTube. Alexey is a HydraPak athlete and has a wiener dog, so he’s got big points in Roxanne’s and my book. I thought the race footage was captivating, and it was interesting hearing Alexey’s approach going into the race and thoughts after the race. Comparing it to running gives some context for me personally how athletes in other endurance sports approach big competition.
Hitting with the EASTON DUB (Double Barrel) | USSSA Baseball Bat Review, Baseball Bat Bros
My baseball fix. I can watch this guy hit all day. I’ve been out of the game of baseball since 2015, but it’s especially enjoyable watching him hit with some of the metal bats that I grew up with. I left the sport before stats hit the performance side of the game head on, so it’s cool to get glimpses of things like “exit velo” in a batting practice context.
Big Carbs for Big Dreams | Road to the Western States 100 Mile, David Roche
Equal parts legendary, equal parts nutty. Like him or not, David Roche is why I follow trail running. He’s got a mad scientist approach to his training for Western States and I’m all for it. In college, my teammates and I would always try to take his Strava CRs at Rancho San Antonio and Huddart Park.
The Finisher: Jasmin Paris and the Barkley Marathons (Full Documentary), Singletrack
This video has 902k videos currently, so good chance if you follow me, you’ve already seen it. If you haven’t, it’s worth a sit down and watch. Female athletes breaking through ultra barriers is really inspiring, especially when they are almost always already mothers and working full-time. I resonate a lot with Jasmin with her mentality and approach to running. Sometimes I wish I could be out there running for hours, just lost in time.
American champion Kenneth Rooks wins 3000m steeplechase final, makes first Olympics, NBC Sports
Studying film. I watch this race at least once a week. Any US championship steeple final I can get my eyes on, I’ve watched at least 10 times.
A couple big announcements are in the works that I can’t wait to share. Hope this holds you off until I actually finish my next write up.
Finally, I’m racing at the Sound Running Track Fest in the steeple this Saturday night— it’s looking to be the best steeple we’ll have in the US this year. You can follow along here.
If you’re interested in my approach, I wrote about the upcoming season a couple weeks ago:
Thanks for your time, team.
Joey
